The Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVetMed), the only one of its kind in Andalusia, was established in Cordoba in 1847 with the creation of the Escuela Subalterna de Veterinaria (Junior School of Veterinary Science), which was elevated to the rank of faculty in 1943. The current study programme of the BVetMed began in the 2010-2011 academic year and is regulated by European Directive 36/2005, partially modified by Directive 55/2013, which establishes the minimum compulsory contents to be included in veterinary studies, which furthermore must have a minimum duration of 5 years. Thus, to obtain a BVetMed, 300 ECTS credits (5 academic years) are required.
Another distinguishing feature of the BVetMed, which ensures its quality within the European regulatory framework, is that the faculties in which it is taught are evaluated every 10 years by a committee of experts from the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE). In 1978, the European Union (EU) established the Advisory Committee for Veterinary Training (ACVT), whose main function has been to review the basic requirements for veterinary education, and entrusted the EAEVE with the responsibility of developing and implementing an evaluation method to ensure compliance by EU member countries.
According to the report issued by the EAEVE Committee of Experts on 2 December 2020, our faculty meets the quality criteria established by the association and by ECOVE, clearly reflecting the prestige and excellence of the education provided at our institution.
In July 2010, the Council of Universities and the General Conference on University Policy approved the ‘Protocol for the monitoring and renewal of accreditation of recognised university degrees’, drawn up by the University Commission for the Regulation of Monitoring and Accreditation (CURSA in its Spanish acronym). The Agency for Scientific and University Quality of Andalusia (ACCUA) is responsible for developing the guidelines and procedures for the implementation and undertaking of the monitoring of Official Degrees from Andalusian Universities, for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area, in line with the established Environmental, Social and Governance criteria (ESG). In 2025, the ACCUA Accreditation Renewal Commission issued a favourable report for the renewal of the accreditation of the BVetMed from the University of Cordoba.
In addition, the Bachelor in Science of Food Science and Technology programme was first offered at the Faculty of Veterinary Science in 1989 as a specific degree of the University of Cordoba, subsequently being structured as a second-cycle degree programme and taught jointly with the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Granada, with the first study programme being approved in 1992 (BOE [Official State Gazette] no. 291, 4 December 1992). The current programme for the BSc of Food Science and Technology was implemented in the 2011-2012 academic year with a duration of four years and 240 ECTS credits. The Faculty of Veterinary Science of the University of Cordoba has been a pioneer in the implementation of this degree, training a considerable number of professionals specialised in the agri-food sector.
On 1 September 2020, the ISEKI-Food association, an independent European organisation established in 2005 with the objective of supporting and promoting academic and professional excellence in the field of food, awarded the BSc of Food Science and Technology the international EQAS-Food Award Accreditation, with the logo of this international certification appearing on our website to indicate the prestige and excellence of the teaching at this institution.
On 5 July 2023 the ACCUA Accreditation Renewal Commission issued a favourable report for the renewal of the accreditation of the BSc of Food Science and Technology from the University of Cordoba.
On 4 April 2025 ACCUA received a favourable report for the implementation of the new BSc of Human Nutrition and Dietetics, being the first Faculty of Veterinary Science in Spain to offer this degree. The programme aims to train highly qualified professionals with a comprehensive vision of food, promote interdisciplinary research and open up new avenues of collaboration between the health and food sectors, positioning the faculty as a benchmark in academic innovation and commitment to global health.
The faculty members also participate in the various university and inter-university master’s degree programmes in a variety of fields, such as the master of science (MSc) degree programmes in the fields of equine sports medicine, human nutrition, public veterinary health, biotechnology, agri-food, agronomic engineering and engineering and management of the agri-food chain and chemical applications for agri-food and environmental businesses, as well as in various PhD programmes offered at the University of Cordoba.
